Quinta Quebrada, is undoubtedly the most extraordinary house in San Miguel de Allende. This imposing and yet charming 16th century casa has 13,864 sq. ft. of living space on three floors and beautifully landscaped grounds covering almost one acre. Ideally located a short walk from the Jardín, the main plaza in this lovely old city, Quinta Quebrada is a true colonial gem and a living museum.
As with many houses here, nothing is visible from the street except high stone walls and the large wooden entrance doors. Upon stepping through them one is instantly dazzled. Within these confines are fabulous courtyards, follies, gardens full of climbing roses, cascading bougainvillea, flowering jacarandas, multiple terraces and loggias. Surrounding the 60' x 40' pool, which can be heated, are two gardens, a terrace and a loggia with dining and seating areas and a fireplace. Pretty curved stone staircases lead down to the lowest level and flank a deep hot tub. Here one finds another charming folly, a terrace with a dining table and chairs and a large lawn with a serpentine bench at one end.
The interiors of Quinta Quebrada are a visual treat as well -- very theatrical yet intimate -- and its décor is a fantastic mix of period colonial Mexican furniture and art with 17th and 18th century furnishings and decorations from Italy and Spain. Having 11 bedrooms with private bathrooms spread throughout the house as well as numerous sitting areas both indoors and out ensures that large numbers of guests have a wonderful sense of privacy. There are always fresh flowers everywhere and at night masses of candles make it even more magical. Another unique aspect of staying here is that one has so many choices of where to have lunch and dinner that every one of the absolutely delicious meals becomes even more special and fun.
