For years the owners of Casa del Mar rented various properties around the island so when they decided to build one of their own, they knew exactly how to create a wonderful island retreat. After finding a perfect spot on a hill for maximum breezes and glorious views, they commissioned this Bahamian plantation style residence and topped it with a charming widow’s walk. The result is a spacious house with broad porches and airy rooms all facing the ocean. Casa del Mar is also designed for maximum comfort and its list of amenities includes air-conditioning in all rooms, a pool with a built-in bench, a generator and a dumbwaiter to take bags or groceries from ground level up to each floor.
A broad staircase, which is beautifully lit at night, leads from the driveway up to the lower floor. The well-laid out interiors are good looking and reflect the owner’s love of beach life. The large Great Room has Saltillo tile floors, a wooden tray ceiling and French doors all around it that open onto a porch, that is both covered and open, with sitting and dining areas. The primary bedroom is on this floor as is a spiral staircase up to the widow's walk. The other three bedrooms are on the lower floor. One is a second primary suite which is separated from the other two bedrooms. All have doors to the wraparound porch with another sitting area. Outside in a walled garden at one end of the pool is a sitting area under a pergola that has steps beside it up to a large lawn which is a perfect spot for drinks and a game of bocce. The dazzling pink sand beach is just a 2 minute walk via a path shared by 4 houses.
